Local people called them Finns. The question as to who those people actually were and how they could possibly have reached northern Scotland has been raised more than once. The kayakers were believed to be either Sami, Eskimos or Sikhirtya – the legendary predecessors of the Nenets on the northern coast of Russia. The objective of this article is to analyze the sources available and describe possible approaches to elucidating the issue.</p>
<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>В конце XVII в. Задача настоящего исследования – проанализировать имеющиеся источники и обозначить основные подходы к решению данной проблемы.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Шотландия</kwd><kwd>Оркнейские острова</kwd><kwd>XVII–XVIII вв.</kwd><kwd>каяки</kwd><kwd>финны</kwd><kwd>саамы</kwd><kwd>эскимосы</kwd><kwd>сихиртя</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Scotland</kwd><kwd>Orkney Islands</kwd><kwd>17th–18th centuries</kwd><kwd>kayaks</kwd><kwd>Finns</kwd><kwd>Sami</kwd><kwd>Eskimos</kwd><kwd>Sikhirtya</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Английские путешественники в Московском государстве в XVI веке / Н.Л.
